Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Install the Add-on & Open a Google Sheet
Install SheetsDuty - On-Call Incident Management from Google Workspace Marketplace. Once installed, open any existing Google Sheet or create a brand new one by typing sheets.new in your browser.
Launch the SheetsDuty Control Panel
From the spreadsheet top menu, select:
Extensions > SheetsDuty > Launch Control Panel
The glassmorphic sidebar will open on the right. SheetsDuty automatically initializes and maintains three dedicated operational tabs:
- _INCIDENTS: The main visible sheet displaying real-time incident triage logs, state changes (OPEN, ACKNOWLEDGED, RESOLVED), latency, and response timestamps.
- _MONITORS: Protected internal sheet tracking registered monitor URLs, check status, and SSL certificate expiration.
- _ALERTS: Protected internal sheet maintaining team responders, escalation roles (Primary vs. Backup), active status, and alert dispatch history.
Authorize Google Apps Script Permissions
Google Workspace will display a one-time authorization modal. SheetsDuty requests only the minimal permissions necessary to operate:
- Spreadsheet Access: To record incidents and read target configurations exclusively in this active sheet.
- External Network Requests: To query the edge monitoring network for uptime status and dispatch transactional notification emails.
- Time-Driven Triggers: To maintain background synchronization and health checks without keeping your browser tab open.
Note: SheetsDuty never reads external Google Drive folders or unrelated spreadsheets. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.
Register Your First Monitoring Endpoint
In the SheetsDuty sidebar, click the Monitors tab to open the Add Monitor section:
- Enter your target URL (e.g. https://api.yourdomain.com/health) into the input field.
- Click Register Target.
- The URL will be registered and displayed immediately under Active Monitors.
Configure On-Call Team Responders
In the SheetsDuty sidebar, navigate to the Team Roster (Alerts) tab to add responders:
- Full Name & Email: Enter the responder's name and notification email address.
- On-Call Role: Select Primary (⚡ L1 responder paged immediately when downtime is detected) or Backup (🛡️ L2 escalation responder paged if the incident is unacknowledged).
- Google Drive Sharing: Make sure your team responders have at least Viewer or Editor access to this spreadsheet via Google Drive's Share button so they can inspect incident logs.
- Click Add Member.
Verify with Manual Controls
Test your configuration immediately using the sidebar's Manual Controls:
- In the sidebar under Manual Controls, click Ping All Monitors Now.
- The edge engine will instantly verify your registered endpoints and update the monitor status in real time.
- You can also click Check SSL Certificates Now to verify certificate validity days.
- If an endpoint is down, an incident is logged in _INCIDENTS and an alert email is dispatched to your Primary responder with a 1-click Acknowledge button.
Inspect Built-in Visual Reports (_REPORTS Tab)
SheetsDuty automatically creates a dedicated _REPORTS tab in your spreadsheet:
- Automated Charts: View native bar charts and trend lines for incident counts, downtime, and daily volume.
- Zero Manual Setup: Formulas update automatically when new incidents appear or resolve.
- Decision Ready: Use these charts to identify flaky endpoints and prove SLA compliance.
Configuring Slack & Microsoft Teams Webhooks
SheetsDuty sends instant incident alerts directly to your Slack and Microsoft Teams channels. This feature requires an active Pro Solo or Pro Team subscription.
Get a Slack Incoming Webhook URL
- Open your Slack workspace in your browser or desktop application.
- Go to the Slack App Directory and search for Incoming WebHooks.
- Click Add to Slack.
- Choose the Slack channel that will receive incident notifications.
- Click Add Incoming WebHooks Integration.
- Copy the generated Webhook URL (format:
https://hooks.slack.com/services/...).
Get a Microsoft Teams Webhook URL
- Open Microsoft Teams and navigate to your team channel.
- Open the channel menu (three dots) and select Workflows or Connectors.
- Search for Post to a channel when a webhook request is received.
- Enter a name for the workflow (for example, "SheetsDuty Alerts").
- Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the channel and click Create flow.
- Copy the generated Webhook URL from the workflow confirmation screen.
Attach Webhooks to Your Monitors
You can configure webhook URLs using the sidebar or the sheet directly:
- Sidebar: When registering a monitor, paste your webhook URL into Webhook URL (Slack / Teams).
- Spreadsheet: Paste webhook URLs directly into the Webhook URL column in the
_MONITORStab. - Multiple Channels: Separate multiple webhook URLs with commas. SheetsDuty supports up to 5 URLs per monitor.
When downtime occurs, SheetsDuty posts an incident card with a 1-Click Acknowledge button. When the endpoint recovers, SheetsDuty posts a recovery card to the same channel.
Interactive Setup Checklist
Use this interactive checklist to track your onboarding progress. Your progress is saved automatically:
Common Setup Troubleshooting
1. "Authorization is Required" Loop / Multiple Google Accounts
If you are signed into multiple Google Accounts in the same Chrome browser profile, Google Apps Script may present an authorization loop.
Resolution: Open Google Sheets in a Chrome profile where only your primary Google account is logged in, or open the sheet in an Incognito window.
2. Restoring Missing Tabs or Damaged Formatting
If a collaborator modifies or accidentally removes system sheets or columns, you can easily restore them:
Open the sidebar and click Run Self-Healing under Manual Controls.
The built-in self-healing engine will immediately restore any missing tabs, headers, and protection rules without overwriting your existing data.
